Pitsidia, Phaistos

Pitsidia is a village in the municipality of Phaistos, Heraklion regional unit, Crete, Greece. It is situated at an altitude of 80 meters, a short distance from the Messara Bay, specifically 1.7 km from Kommos beach and 2 km from Matala Bay. The village is known for its tourism, agriculture (olive oil, viticulture, wine production), livestock farming, and fishing. It has a kindergarten and a primary school.

History

Pitsidia is one of the oldest villages in the area. According to historian Stergios Spanakis, it was the settlement site for soldiers of Nikephoros Phokas, the commander of the Byzantine army, in 961. These soldiers, hailing from Pisidia in southern Asia Minor, were renowned for their bravery and gave the village its current name, derived from their homeland.

The village is first mentioned in a 1369 document from the Ducal Archives of Chandakas (Heraklion) and is also recorded in the 1583 census with 89 inhabitants. Local tradition holds that the villagers, known for their courage, defeated the Triamates at Skilochorio.

Pitsidia is a well-developed tourist destination, particularly popular with families. It offers various attractions, including a horse riding center that organizes excursions to nearby areas. The village’s economy relies on tourism, agriculture, livestock farming, and fishing.
