Panagia ton Angelon, or the Church of the Angels, is located in the rural area of Fradio, between the villages of Roufas and Moroni. The church served as the catholicon, or main church, of the Catholic monastery of Panagia ton Angelon, which belonged to the Franciscan order of monks and operated during the 15th century. Today, the church celebrates the Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15th) and the Annunciation (March 25th).
The impressive church is surrounded by the ruins of the cells and other buildings of the monastery, which is one of the few Catholic monasteries in rural Crete. The monastery of the Franciscans was likely founded in the 15th century in the location of the now-ruined village of Fradio. The single-nave church dedicated to Panagia ton Angelon is the only structure that remains from this monastery. The church has several interesting architectural elements with Gothic influences.
