Historical References

Miamou’s historical presence is evidenced through various records and archaeological findings. Venetian census data from 1583 lists the village as “Miamú” with a population of 204, indicating its establishment during the Venetian era. The nearby settlement of Krotos, now part of the Miamou community, is mentioned in the 1671 Turkish census as “Crotho” with 17 “haratsia” (tax units), suggesting a history intertwined with the Ottoman period as well.

Furthermore, archaeological excavations have unearthed traces of human activity in the area dating back to the Neolithic period. A small cave within the village yielded artifacts indicative of human habitation as early as 3500 BC. Additionally, a tholos tomb from the Protominoan II/Mesominoan I period, discovered near the village, reveals the presence of a more organized society during the Bronze Age. Remnants of a Protominoan settlement further emphasize the area’s continuous occupation throughout history.

The village’s name itself carries historical significance. Local lore attributes the name “Miamou” to a period of epidemic when survivors from scattered settlements gathered together to form a new community, symbolized by the words “mia” (one) and “omou” (together).

Miamou is situated in the Messara plain, a fertile agricultural region in southern Crete. While the plain offers favorable conditions for farming, the village’s proximity to the Asterousia Mountains adds a unique dimension to its landscape.
