Melampes, Agios Vassilios

Melambes is a mountain village situated in the Agios Vasileios municipality within the Rethymno regional unit of Crete, Greece. It holds the distinction of being the seat of its own community.

Geographical Location

Melambes is located 42 kilometers from Rethymno along the route to Agia Galini, and about 10 kilometers before reaching the latter. The village is perched on the southern slopes of Mount Kentros at an altitude of 600 meters. This vantage point offers panoramic views, including Psiloritis to the north from the Vouvala hilltop, and the Messara Plain and the Libyan Sea to the south. Historically, Melambes was the primary hub of the eastern part of the province, known for its thriving livestock breeding, viticulture, and olive oil production.

History

The name “Melambes” is an ancient Greek toponym with a distinct archaic character, both in terms of form and sound. Near the village, at the site of Kouroi, lies the archaeological site of the ancient city of Korio, where the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Electra can be found. The river Elektras also derives its name from this temple. The first historical reference to Melambes dates back to the Venetian era in 1577 by Francesco Barozzi. In 1583, a census recorded 338 inhabitants in the village. During the Ottoman occupation, the residents of Melambes actively participated in various struggles, from the Greek War of Independence in 1821 to the Cretan Revolution of 1866 and the final Cretan Revolution (1895-1898).
