A Secluded Beach in the Asterousia Mountains
Location and Access
Martsalo Beach is located in the Asterousia Mountains in southern Crete, about 80 kilometers southwest of Heraklion. It is a remote beach that can only be reached by a dirt road from the Odigitria Monastery. The road leads to Cape Lithino, and after a few kilometers, there is a sign for Martsalo. The road then goes down into the Martsalo Gorge, where visitors must park their cars and walk. The walk through the gorge takes about 20-30 minutes and offers views of the surrounding cliffs and vegetation.
A Historical and Spiritual Place
Martsalo Gorge has historical and spiritual significance. It has been a place of refuge for monks from the Odigitria Monastery for centuries, and the remains of their dwellings can still be seen along the trail. The gorge also has the church of Panagia Martsaliani, built in a cave and dedicated to the Annunciation. This church was used as a catacomb during times of religious persecution.
Natural Features
The gorge is a sanctuary for the endemic Cretan Date Palm (Phoenix Theophrasti). The palm trees create a unique landscape. As the trail nears the beach, the gorge opens up to the Libyan Sea.
Beach Features
Martsalo Beach is made up of large pebbles. The water is usually calm. A small pier shows the beach’s historical use as a place for boats. Tamarisk trees provide shade along the shoreline.
A Place of Respect
Martsalo is a place of natural beauty and religious significance. Visitors are asked to be mindful of this.
