Maleme, Platanias

Maleme is a village located 16 km west of Chania in northwestern Crete, Greece. It is part of the Platanias municipality within the Chania regional unit.

The village holds historical significance due to its role in the Battle of Crete during World War II. In May 1941, Maleme’s airfield became a primary target for German paratroopers. Despite a valiant defense by New Zealand soldiers, communication issues and strategic miscalculations led to the airfield’s capture, enabling German reinforcements to secure the island.

The Battle of Crete

The Battle of Crete was a fierce struggle between Allied forces (mainly British, Greek, and Commonwealth troops) and the invading German forces. The battle lasted from May 20th to June 1st, 1941. Although the Germans eventually won, they suffered heavy casualties, deterring them from undertaking further large-scale airborne operations. The battle is considered a significant event in World War II, marking the first primarily airborne invasion and highlighting the courage and resilience of the Cretan people.

Historical Overview

Evidence suggests Maleme’s history dates back to ancient times. A Late Minoan period tholos tomb was discovered north of the village, containing pottery fragments and seal stones. The French archaeologist Paul Faure suggests the name “Maleme” might derive from the Greek word for gold (“malama”), hinting at a possible ancient gold mine in the area.

The first recorded mention of Maleme dates back to 1577 in the records of the Venetian cartographer Fr. Barozzi. Later, in 1583, the Venetian census (Kastrofylakas) listed it as “Maleme et Venerocori” with 101 inhabitants. The village endured through Ottoman rule and continued to exist after Crete’s liberation from the Turks. Following the Ottoman departure, families from the Lakki village settled in Maleme, contributing significantly to its growth.
