Makres
Makres is a small village located in Crete, at the foot of Mount Psiloritis, at an altitude of 490 meters. It is situated 3 kilometers north of Moroni and administratively belongs to the Municipality of Phaistos. According to the 2001 census, Makres has 217 inhabitants. The main economic activity of the village is the production of olive oil and raisins.
In the village, there are two churches, the Church of the Annunciation and the Church of Saint John. The first reference to Makres is made in the Turkish census of 1671, along with the settlement of Drosos, as “Drosos m’a Makres”. In 1881, Makres had 63 Christian inhabitants.
Community of Moroni
The Community of Moroni, to which Makres belongs, was established in 1931 and includes the settlements of Makres, Moroni, Panagia, and Fari. According to the 2011 census, the population of the community is distributed as follows:
- Makres: 127 inhabitants
- Moroni: 198 inhabitants
- Panagia: 15 inhabitants
- Fari: 0 inhabitants
In total, the community has 340 inhabitants.
