Lagolio, Phaistos

Lagolio is situated south of Mount Kartalos, in the Heraklion regional unit of Crete. The village sits at an elevation of 180 meters and is located 68 kilometers southwest of Heraklion and about 5 kilometers north of Tymbaki.

History and Name Origins

Lagolio’s earliest documented mention is in a 1671 Turkish census. It is absent from Venetian records, suggesting it was founded sometime after the Venetian period, possibly by people migrating from nearby settlements that disappeared, such as Kartallos and Mournidi.

The village’s name has a couple of possible origins. It could be derived from the Greek word for hare, “lagos,” implying the area once had a large hare population. Another theory suggests it evolved from “Lagkoeliés,” meaning “olive grove hollows,” indicating the abundance of olive trees in the region.

Village Life

Lagolio is primarily an agricultural community. The main churches in the village are dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and Saints Constantine and Helen. Other churches are dedicated to Saint John (located in the cemetery) and Archangel Michael. The primary occupation of the residents is agriculture, specifically olive growing and viticulture.

Population Changes

Lagolio’s population has fluctuated throughout its history. It reached a peak of 160 residents in 1951 but has since decreased. The 2011 census recorded a population of 54. This trend of population decline is common in many small Cretan villages, as younger generations often move to larger towns and cities.

Administrative History

Lagolio has been part of various administrative divisions over time. It was initially within the Kissos Municipality, then the Grigoria rural municipality, and later the Klima community. In 1940, it became an independent community. In 1998, it was incorporated into the Tymbaki Municipality, and since 2011, it has been part of the Phaistos Municipality.
