Krya Vrysi, Agios Vassilios

Krya Vrysi is a village situated in the Agios Vassilios municipality of Rethymno, Crete. Located on the southern slopes of Mount Kedros, the village is 46 kilometers from Rethymno and sits at an altitude of 480 meters. The name “Krya Vrysi” translates to “Cold Spring,” referencing the abundant water sources in the area, particularly a spring with cold water located south of the village in the Gre Dafni ravine.

Historical Context

The village’s history is intertwined with that of Crete. It was first documented in 1577 by Francesco Barozzi as “Criavrissi.” Venetian and Ottoman records further attest to its existence under various names throughout the centuries. The residents of Krya Vrysi actively participated in uprisings against the Ottomans, notably in the 1822 battle at Kako Ryiaki, where a local resident, Yero Assoumanakis, played a crucial role in the Cretan victory. The village also contributed fighters and a distinctive flag to later rebellions.

During World War II, Krya Vrysi was involved in the Cretan resistance, providing aid and shelter to Greek and British partisans. Tragically, this led to its destruction by German forces on August 22, 1944. The village was razed, and 35 men were executed. Following the war, the displaced residents relocated to a new settlement, Kato Krya Vrysi, about a kilometer southeast.
