Kolymvari, also known as Kolymbari, is a coastal village located in the Platanias municipality of the Chania regional unit, Crete. Situated approximately 20 kilometers west of Chania town, it lies on the old national road connecting Chania to Kissamos. Historically part of the Kissamos province, Kolymvari has evolved from a small agricultural village to a developing tourist destination, known for its long beach and proximity to the historic Gonia Monastery.
Historical Overview
Kolymvari is a relatively new village, first mentioned in the 1900 census. Originally named “Kolymbari,” it was renamed “Kolymvari” in 1940. The village is situated at the western end of Chania Bay. Its sandy beach witnessed two significant historical events:
- Ottoman Invasion (1645): In 1645, Ottoman forces landed on Kolymvari’s beach, marking the beginning of the Great Cretan War, which led to the Ottoman conquest of Crete.
- Greek Landing (1897): In 1897, Greek Colonel Timoleon Vassos landed at Kolymvari with a substantial force, aiming to liberate Crete from Ottoman rule. This event triggered the Greco-Turkish War of 1897.
Following Crete’s union with Greece in 1913, Kolymvari gradually developed as an agricultural center, benefiting from the fertile land in the surrounding area. With the rise of tourism in Crete, Kolymvari has also become a popular destination, offering a combination of natural beauty, historical sites, and modern amenities.
