The village’s name has its roots in a patronymic, derived from the words “kalo” (good) + “chorafi” (field) and the suffix “-itis” denoting origin. Thus, “Kalochorafitis” translates to “one originating from the Good Field,” likely referring to the area’s first settler. Over time, this patronymic evolved into the toponym “Kalochorafitis,” with its inhabitants known as “Kalochorafithianoi.”
Historical References
The earliest mention of the settlement appears in a contract dated January 28, 1399, by the notary Manouil Morzinos. In this document, Kostis Entzos, a resident of “Kalo Chorafi,” declares his son Nikolaos Entzos as his heir. Scholars believe this “Kalo Chorafi” is likely Kalochorafitis.
Francesco Barozzi lists the settlement as “Caloghorafici” in the Pyrgiotissa castellany in 1577. It appears as “Caloghorafiti” with 108 inhabitants in Pietro Castrofilaca’s 1583 records and as “Calochorafiti” in Francesco Basilicata’s 1630 work. From this period, the chapel of Agios Georgios o Methystis, located south of the Kato Metochi settlement, remains largely intact despite being burned in 1866. This chapel, adorned with a fresco technique, dates back to the first half of the 15th century.
In 1881, Kalochorafitis, then comprising three neighborhoods (Kato Metochi, Mesi, Piso Rouma), belonged to the municipality of Kisson with 28 Christian and 43 Muslim residents. It remained within this municipality in 1900 with 47 inhabitants. Of the three original neighborhoods, only Kato Metochi survives today, albeit in ruins. The other two toponyms are unfamiliar to current residents.
