Ini, Minoa – Pediada

Ini is a village and the seat of the homonymous community in the Municipality of Minoa Pediada in the Heraklion Regional Unit of Crete. It used to belong to the province of Monofatsiou and is situated approximately 44 kilometers from Heraklion. The village’s cultural association is called “Ini-Monastiraki,” and its central church is dedicated to Saint George. Ini also has a primary school and a kindergarten.

Historical Context

Ini has a long and storied past. It is mentioned in the 1583 census of Castrofilacas (Kastrofylakas) with the name Igni and a population of 114 inhabitants. During the Ottoman occupation, it was inhabited exclusively by Turks, with 5 families recorded in 1834. However, they left during the revolutions, and by 1881, the village had 129 Christians and 21 Turks.

The village is believed to be the site of the ancient city of Arcadia or Arkades. Initially allied with Knossos, Arcadia later switched its allegiance to Lyttos after 221 BC. It was an autonomous city with its own currency, featuring the head of Zeus Ammon on one side and Athena leaning on a spear with the inscription “ΑΡΚΑΔΩΝ” on the other.

The surrounding areas of Ini, including Machairas and Monastiraki, also have historical references dating back to the 1583 census. These villages were predominantly inhabited by Turks during the Ottoman period.
