Epano Archanes

Epano Archanes, often referred to simply as Archanes, is a town located in the Heraklion regional unit on the island of Crete, Greece. It serves as the seat of the Archanes-Asterousia municipality and the Archanes community.

Geography and Location

Situated at an elevation of 400 meters, Epano Archanes is positioned at the northeastern edge of the valley formed by Mount Juktas. The town is approximately 16 kilometers south of Heraklion, the capital of Crete.

History

The name Archanes is believed to be a modern variation of the ancient city “Acharna”, where a sanctuary dedicated to the god Archos was located. The existence of an ancient city at the site of present-day Archanes is supported by excavations conducted in 1957, 1964, and subsequent years. Within the town, a palace from the Late Minoan period was discovered, featuring double-sided altars and wall paintings. Furthermore, an extensive Minoan necropolis was found at Fourni, where a king’s tomb contained valuable artifacts such as rings, seals, and other treasures. These findings attest to the presence of a significant Minoan city in the area of modern-day Archanes.

The town features cobblestone streets, picturesque squares, and beautifully restored neoclassical mansions.
