Azogyras, Kissamos

Azogyras, not to be confused with Azogyres, is a small village located in the Kissamos municipality of the Chania regional unit on the island of Crete, Greece. It lies at an altitude of 110 meters on the base of the Gramvousa peninsula, east of Falassarna.

Origin of the Name

The name Azogyras is believed to derive from the plant Anagyris foetida, which is found in the area and is known in Crete by various names, including “azogyros,” “azojeras,” and “azogyres.”

Historical Overview

Azogyras is one of the oldest settlements in Crete that retains its original name. It is mentioned in Venetian records as early as 1583, with a recorded population of 140 inhabitants. Throughout its history, Azogyras has been a predominantly agricultural community, taking advantage of the fertile land in the Kissamos region.

In 1925, Azogyras was officially recognized as a distinct settlement and attached to the community of Larda. With the implementation of the Kapodistrias plan in 1997, it became part of the Gramvousa community. Under the Kallikratis program in 2010, it remained within the Kissamos municipality.
