Asomatos, Agios Vassilios

Asomatos (Άγιος Ανδρέας (Saint Andrew)) is a village in the Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete, Greece.

Location

It is located 31 kilometers south of Rethymno, at an altitude of 230 meters above sea level. The village is situated near the exit of the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, on the southern slopes of Mount Kouroupa. The nearest beaches are located 6 kilometers from the village, namely Damnoni, Ammoudi, Plakias, and Shinaria.

History

The village was named Asomatos after the church of Archangel Michael.

  • Venetian Era: The village is mentioned in Venetian documents dating back to 1577, 1583, and 1630.
  • Egyptian Census (1834): Records indicate that the village had a purely Christian population of 15 families.
  • Ottoman Era (1881): Asomatos was part of the municipality of Finikas and had a population of 143 Christians.
  • Early 20th Century: In 1900, the village had 196 inhabitants. By 1920, it was the seat of a rural municipality.
  • Mid 20th Century: In 1925, Asomatos became the seat of a community.
  • Modern Era: Following the Kapodistrian administrative division, the village was annexed to the Municipality of Finikas.
