Armanogia is a village in the Municipality of Archanes-Asterousia, Heraklion regional unit, Crete, Greece. It is situated at an altitude of 372 meters, approximately 28 kilometers south of Heraklion city and 16 kilometers south of Epano Archanes.
The village is known for its musical tradition, being the birthplace of several renowned lyra players, “mantinadolÏŒgoi” (improvisational poets who compose rhyming couplets called “mantinades”), and storytellers skilled in the Cretan dialect. The inhabitants are primarily engaged in agriculture (producing wine, raisins, and olive oil) and livestock farming.
Etymology
According to the scholar S. Alexiou, the name “Armanogia” is derived from the phrase “Erima Anogia,” meaning “Deserted Anogia.” This suggests a possible connection to the village of Anogia in Mylopotamos, known for its strong traditions and rebellious spirit.
