Ano Akria, Gortyna

Ano Akria

Ano Akria is a village and the seat of the Ano Akria community in the Municipality of Gortyna, Heraklion Regional Unit, Crete, Greece. It is located 40 kilometers from Heraklion, at an altitude of 460 meters.

The village has a history dating back to the Venetian period, with records mentioning both Ano and Kato Akria in Venetian censuses. During the Ottoman period, Ano Akria was inhabited by Turks and had a mosque. The present-day church of the village was built on the site of the former mosque.
