Agios Georgios Church in Toupaki: A 15th-Century Masterpiece

The Agios Georgios Church, located on Toupaki hill near Episkopi, is a single-nave, barrel-vaulted structure that once served as the katholikon (main church) of a monastery associated with the Agarathos Monastery. Today, only the church and the cistern remain, while the monastic cells have succumbed to time. The church stands on a hill within a verdant landscape, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The church’s sole entrance is on the west side and features a Venetian doorway with a serrated lintel adorned with two spirals framing a flower. Based on the doorway’s style and the interior frescoes, the church is estimated to have been built in the early 15th century. The built-in iconostasis dates back to the late Renaissance and is embellished with contemporary portable icons of the Annunciation and Saint George.

The interior of the church boasts exceptional frescoes from the 15th century, covering almost the entirety of the walls. These frescoes are stylistically similar to those found in Agios Georgios Church in Embaros, suggesting a connection to the painter Manuel Fokas or his circle. In addition to the customary Christological cycle, scenes from the life of Saint George adorn the elongated walls, while the Last Judgment graces the west wall. The lower part of the north wall features two large scenes: the dragon-slaying of Saint George, with a detailed depiction of the city of Alasia, and the abbot Zosimas giving communion to Saint Mary of Egypt. The walls are also marked with inscriptions in Latin, left by past visitors.
