Damasta Commemorates 80 Years Since the Holocaust: A Tribute to Solidarity and Remembrance
Honoring Communities of Refuge
On Monday, August 19th, 2024, at 6:30 PM, a special memorial event will be held at the Damasta School courtyard to express gratitude to the local communities of Chonos, Aloides, Garazo, and Theodora, as well as the Municipality of Mylopotamos, for their compassion and support in sheltering the people of Damasta following the devastating events of August 21st, 1944. Representatives from these communities and local authorities will be present to share their stories and pay tribute to the enduring spirit of solidarity.
“Whispers of Ashes” Exhibition
In conjunction with the memorial event, an exhibition titled “Whispers of Ashes” will open its doors, offering a poignant glimpse into the dark chapter of the Damasta Holocaust. This exhibition brings together, for the first time, archival materials and artifacts related to the execution of 30 Damasta residents and the subsequent destruction of the village. Through newspaper clippings, German archives, historical accounts, audio recordings, and personal belongings from family collections, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the tragic events of August 1944.
