The Cultural Association of Kroustas is hosting its annual Ftazymo Festival on August 17th at the Kroustas primary school. This year’s festival will feature a special addition: a cheese exhibition where visitors can sample a variety of delicious local cheeses. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to witness the traditional process of “xinochondros” (sourdough preparation) firsthand.
A Celebration of Cretan Cuisine
Ftazymo, also known as eftazymo, is a unique Cretan bread made without yeast or sourdough starter. Instead, ground chickpeas are used as a leavening agent, resulting in a flavorful and slightly sweet bread. The festival pays homage to this traditional bread and the rich culinary traditions of Crete.
Live Music and Festivities
The festival will be accompanied by the lively music of Iakovos Paterakis (lyre), Vasilis Stavrakakis (mandolin), Antonis Stavrakakis (mandolin), Giorgos Stavrakakis (laouto), and Giannis Papatzanis (percussion). Their performance will create a festive atmosphere, perfect for enjoying the delicious food and celebrating Cretan culture.
