8th Festos Run: A Journey Through Time and History

After a year’s hiatus, the Festos Run returns on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, inviting runners to embark on a journey through the heart of Crete’s rich cultural heritage.

This 9-kilometer race offers a unique opportunity to experience the area’s captivating history while enjoying a scenic run. Starting at the awe-inspiring archaeological site of Phaistos, a major center of Minoan civilization, participants will traverse a route that winds through picturesque landscapes and ancient landmarks.

Discover Crete’s Rich Heritage

As you run, immerse yourself in the island’s rich tapestry of history. The route passes by significant sites such as:

• Phaistos Archaeological Site: The starting point of the race, this ancient palace is a testament to the Minoan civilization’s architectural and artistic achievements.
• Agios Georgios Falandras Monastery: Although now in ruins, this Venetian-era monastery offers a glimpse into Crete’s religious past.
• Church of Agios Pavlos (Saint Paul): Tradition holds that the Apostle Paul preached at this 13th-century church, built on the site of an early Christian baptistery.
• Kamilari Village: This charming village is home to several historical treasures, including a Roman graveyard and a tholos tomb dating back to 1900 BC.
• Mana Elia and Tourkolia Olive Trees: These ancient olive trees, estimated to be thousands of years old, stand as living monuments to Crete’s agricultural heritage.
• Minoan Villas of Pitsidia and Kalamaki: These villas offer insights into Minoan daily life and architectural practices.
