The church of Zoodochos Pigi (Life-Giving Spring) is located in the area of Prinias, near the village of Archontiko (formerly Alitzani) in the Monofatsi province of Crete. The church sits within a well-maintained courtyard. It is a small, single-nave church with a barrel vault. Traces of damaged 14th-century frescoes are visible on the walls, and ceramic vessels are embedded in the walls to improve the acoustics.

History

The church was in ruins until the late 1960s when it underwent restoration. The saint to whom the church was originally dedicated was unknown. After its restoration, it was initially dedicated to Saint Nikitas (which is why the church also celebrates on September 15th). Later, following a vision and due to the presence of a well on the site, it was rededicated to Zoodochos Pigi (celebrated 5 days after Easter).

The village of Archontiko is notable for the arrangement of its churches which form the shape of a cross, with the village at the center. The church of Zoodochos Pigi is one of several old churches that surround and symbolically protect the village.

Damage from the 2021 Earthquake

Archontiko was one of the settlements in the Municipality of Minoa Pediada that suffered severe damage from the earthquake of September 27, 2021. Many of its ecclesiastical monuments, including Zoodochos Pigi, date from the Venetian period. These structures suffered significant damage from the earthquake’s strong tremors. The western and southern walls of Zoodochos Pigi collapsed, leaving a large hole in the structure. Restoration of these damaged monuments presents a challenge, particularly given the widespread destruction to other monuments in the wider region, including the municipalities of Minoa Pediada and Archanes Asterousia.
