The Mayor, Municipal Council of Faistos, the President, and members of the Local Council of Vorizia invite you to a memorial event honoring the local heroes who fell during the battle against the occupying forces at Trachili, Vorizia, on August 15, 1943. The event will take place on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the Holy Church of Panagia Armatokratousa in Vorizia.

Background: The Battle of Trachili

The Battle of Trachili was a significant event in the Cretan resistance against German occupation during World War II. On August 15, 1943, a small group of 22 Cretan partisans from the “Psiloritis” group engaged a much larger German force of 450 soldiers. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the partisans fought valiantly, inflicting casualties on the German troops before successfully evading capture.

Tragically, the German forces retaliated against the village of Vorizia on August 26th, executing five civilians and forcing the entire population to flee. The village was then subjected to aerial bombardment and arson, leaving it in ruins. Vorizia was later rebuilt and, in 2000, was officially recognized as a “martyr village” for its sacrifices during the war.

This memorial event serves as a solemn reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of the local heroes who fought for freedom during a dark period in history. It is an opportunity to honor their memory and reflect on the importance of resistance and resilience.
