Akoumia, Agios Vassilios

Akoumia is a village in the Rethymno regional unit, Crete, with a population of around 450 people. It is located in the southern part of the region, about 35 km south of Rethymno town, nestled in the foothills of Mount Siderotas. The village is known for its traditional character, its proximity to the two Triopetra beaches, and its Byzantine church of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

History

The village is believed to have been founded around the year 1000, during the Byzantine era, after Nikephoros Phokas liberated Crete from the Arabs. This is supported by the presence of 10th-11th century frescoes in the church of the Transfiguration of the Savior. The village has a long history of participation in Cretan uprisings and wars, including the Greek War of Independence, the Balkan Wars, and World War II.

Name

The origin of the name “Akoumia” is uncertain. One theory suggests it derives from the Byzantine word “koumos,” meaning a small shelter for animals. Another theory links it to the Komnenos family, a prominent Byzantine dynasty. The first theory is considered more likely, as the village is referred to as “Koumnia” in a 1917 religious document.

Economy and Culture

Historically, the Akoumia community was largely self-sufficient, with agriculture and livestock farming as the main economic activities. This led to a close-knit community with a strong emphasis on tradition and education. While the population has declined in recent times, the village maintains its traditions and enjoys a lively atmosphere, especially during the summer months and the August 15th festival.
