Kissou Kampos (Κισσού Κάμπος), also known as Paraga, is a small village located in the Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete, Greece. It is part of the municipality of Agios Vasileios. The village is situated inland, surrounded by rolling hills and olive groves, offering a tranquil and picturesque setting.
History
Kissou Kampos is a relatively new settlement, established in the early 1930s. Initially, two small wooden structures were built in the area, serving as a café, grocery store, and tavern. These structures were destroyed by a fire around 1935. Afterward, permanent houses were constructed, and people from nearby villages, such as Kissos and Kentrochori, settled in the area, mainly during the 1950s.
Kissou Kampos was officially recognized as a settlement in 1951, belonging to the community of Kissos in the province of Agios Vasileios. The village’s water supply was established in 1964 through a donation. Electricity reached the village in 1976, and a telephone connection was established in 1985. In 1997, it became part of the Kapodistrian municipality of Lampi, and since 2011, it has been part of the municipality of Agios Vasileios.
The central church of the village is dedicated to Agios Vasileios (Saint Basil).
Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, particularly olive oil production and livestock farming. The village maintains its traditional character and offers a peaceful environment for its residents.
