Historical Information
The toponym is andronymic and means the village of the Karavados. It is therefore considered more correct to write Karavado. It is not mentioned in the Venetian censuses, nor in the Kastrofylakas in 1583. In the 1881 census, the village is reported with 89 Christian inhabitants. The inhabitants arrived after 1630, according to the oral tradition of the village, from the settlement “Voulgara”, “Voulgaro” and “Voulgara” as recorded in the Venetian censuses.
Location
The picturesque village of Karavado is located about 50 km southeast of Heraklion and administratively belongs to the municipality of Minoa Pediada.
Points of Interest
One of the most important sights of the village are the five watermills of the 19th and 20th centuries, located east of the village along the Baratis River. Three of them are preserved in good condition and used to operate in the past for grinding cereals, using the power of water. These mills offer a magical picture for lovers of nature and tradition, as they are located at a distance of 500 m from each other. Near the river, a section of the old stone-built cistern, which served the irrigation needs of the area, is also preserved.
In addition, in the heart of the village, one can admire an old fountain, which dates back to around 1905, adding particular historical and architectural interest.
Churches
The central church is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary.
