Kalamaki: A Modern Seaside Resort in South Crete

Kalamaki is a popular coastal village in the Heraklion regional unit of Crete, situated in the southern part of the island. It lies 67 kilometers south of Heraklion and is in close proximity to Kamilari, Matala, and Phaistos.

Location and Accessibility

Kalamaki is located on the coast of the Messara Bay, boasting the longest beach in southern Crete. Its central position on the south coast provides easy access to various tourist attractions and archaeological sites, including Matala, Kommos, Phaistos, Agia Galini, and more.

Reaching Kalamaki is straightforward. From Heraklion, follow the road towards Moires and Tymbaki, then turn left towards Kamilari shortly before reaching Tymbaki. Kalamaki is located about 3 kilometers west of Kamilari. From Chania or Rethymno, head towards Spili, Agia Galini, and Tymbaki. About 2 kilometers past Tymbaki, turn right towards Kamilari and Kalamaki. During the summer months, regular buses operate to Moires and Tymbaki, from where you can take another bus or a taxi to Kalamaki.

Atmosphere and Activities

Kalamaki offers a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling nightlife of nearby Matala. Its long sandy beach provides ample space for visitors to enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. The beach is also a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), adding a unique natural element to the area.
